The Healthy Plant Guide: How to Use Every Elm Dirt Product for Thriving, Beautiful Plants

There is a moment every plant lover knows. You walk past a plant you have cared for, and you notice it: a brand-new leaf unfurling, deeper green than the last. A bud where there wasn't one yesterday. That quiet little thrill is why we do this.
After more than 40 years of growing flowers and plants, here is what we have learned at Rooted Treasures Farms: healthy plants are not about luck or a "green thumb." They come from a simple, steady rhythm of good soil, gentle feeding, clean leaves, and early protection. That is exactly why we carry the full line of Elm Dirt organic plant-care products. Each one does one job well, and together they form a complete system you can follow for every plant you own.
This guide walks you through every Elm Dirt product we carry, what it does, exactly how to use it, and how to combine them into one easy routine. Think of it as your roadmap from "I hope this plant makes it" to "Look at this plant."

The Elm Dirt Philosophy: Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plant
Most synthetic fertilizers feed the plant for a moment and leave the soil a little more lifeless each time. Elm Dirt takes the opposite approach. Its formulas are built on premium worm castings and beneficial microbes that bring the soil itself back to life. See our Elm Dirt starter routine to put these products together.
Healthy soil is a living community. Microbes break down organic matter, unlock nutrients, and help protect roots from disease. When the soil is alive, the plant above it becomes stronger, greener, and more resilient almost on its own.
Elm Dirt products are made in Kansas City, Missouri, and every one we carry fits into one of four simple steps:
| Step | Goal | Elm Dirt products |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build | A living foundation for roots | All-Purpose Soil Mix, Premium Aroid Mix, Worm Castings |
| 2. Feed | Steady, gentle nutrition | Plant Juice, Bloom Juice, Bloomin' Soil |
| 3. Strengthen | Stress tolerance and faster uptake | Kelp Mist Foliar Spray |
| 4. Clean and protect | Clean leaves and natural pest defense | Plant Perfection, Shield, Sword |
Let's walk through each one.
Step 1: Build a Living Foundation
Every healthy plant starts below the surface. If you get the soil right, almost everything else gets easier. Our guide on how to create the best soil mix for any indoor plant goes deeper into soil science; here is how the Elm Dirt mixes fit in.
All-Purpose Soil Mix: Your Everyday Potting Soil

The All-Purpose Soil Mix is a 100% peat-free potting soil made with PittMoss, mushroom compost, and Elm Dirt's Ancient Soil, which contains premium worm castings with more than 250 species of beneficial bacteria and fungi. It holds moisture well without staying soggy, so you water less often.
Use it for: Most houseplants, herbs, vegetables, flower containers, raised beds, seedlings, and transplants. The one exception is that it is not intended for cacti and succulents.
How to use it:
- Choose a pot with drainage holes, one to two inches wider than the current root ball.
- Add a layer of mix to the bottom, set the plant at the same depth it was growing, and fill in around the sides.
- Press gently, water thoroughly, and let excess water drain away.
Premium Aroid Mix: The Rainforest Floor in a Bag

Tropical aroids like Monsteras, Philodendrons, Pothos, Anthuriums, and Alocasias evolved climbing trees in the rainforest, with their roots in loose, airy material. Dense soil suffocates them. The Premium Aroid Mix recreates that environment with chunky orchid bark for drainage, perlite to prevent compaction, and Ancient Soil for slow-release nutrition.
Use it for: Monsteras, Philodendrons, Pothos, Anthuriums, Alocasias, Hoyas, orchids, and any plant that hates "wet feet."
Why it matters: Root rot is one of the most common ways tropical plants are lost. Water flows quickly through this chunky mix, so roots get oxygen instead of sitting in mud. If you've ever wondered why leaves turn yellow, soggy soil is often the reason.
Shop the plants it was made for: Browse our Monsteras, Philodendrons, and other tropicals, including easy starters like the Split-Leaf Monstera.
Worm Castings: The Heart of Healthy Soil

If you only buy one Elm Dirt product, many growers would tell you to make it Worm Castings. These are pure Red Wiggler castings, Class A compost certified and third-party tested, packed with billions of beneficial microbes and nutrients that release slowly for three to six months. They are gentle enough for seedlings and will not burn roots.
Three ways to use them (see our Worm Castings product page):
- Mix into soil when repotting. Blend 1 part castings with 4 parts potting soil (about 20%).
- Top-dress existing plants. Spread a 1/4-inch layer on top of the soil every four to six weeks, keeping castings away from the stems.
- Brew worm tea. Steep 1 cup of castings in 1 gallon of dechlorinated water for 24 hours, then water struggling houseplants with it once a week.
Inspiring tip: Worm castings are the easiest "upgrade" you can give a plant you already own. No repotting needed. Just sprinkle, water, and watch over the following weeks.
Step 2: Feed With Living Nutrition
With a living foundation in place, your plants are ready for steady, gentle feeding. Elm Dirt's liquid fertilizers are brewed from worm castings to multiply beneficial microbes, so every watering also builds healthier soil.
Plant Juice: The All-Season, All-Plant Fertilizer

Plant Juice is the everyday workhorse of the Elm Dirt line. It combines more than 50 nutrients with beneficial microbes and works on everything that grows: houseplants, flowers, vegetables, trees, lawns, even cacti. Elm Dirt describes it as the all-stage fertilizer that promotes root, leaf, and stem growth (Plant Juice at Rooted Treasures Farms).
How to use it:
- Mix 2 to 3 ounces per gallon of water, as listed on the product page, and water at the base of the plant. For indoor plants, start at the lower end.
- A single 32-ounce bottle makes 32 gallons of plant food.
- Feed every two to four weeks during spring and summer, and less often in fall and winter when growth slows.
Why we love it: It's gentle. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, Plant Juice is formulated so you can't burn your plants, even if you're a little heavy-handed. It also comes with a 180-day guarantee.
Curious about DIY feeding too? Our posts on homemade fertilizer for indoor plants and fermented plant juice are great companions to this guide.
Bloom Juice: For Flowers and Fruit

When a plant is ready to flower or fruit, its needs change. Bloom Juice uses a proprietary microbe blend to trigger blooming, strengthen stems so they can hold heavier fruit, and help plants handle heat and drought. It has a real pedigree: it was used to win 57 ribbons at the Missouri State Rose Championship.
Use it for: Peace lilies, Anthuriums, orchids, African violets, roses, tomatoes, peppers, annuals, and perennials.
How to use it:
- Mix 2 to 3 ounces per gallon of water.
- Apply every two to three weeks during the growing and blooming season.
- Water into the soil around the base of the plant, or use it as a foliar spray.
Simple rule of thumb: Plant Juice for green growth, Bloom Juice for flowers and fruit.
Bloomin' Soil: Slow-Release Bloom Power

Bloomin' Soil is the dry, slow-release partner to Bloom Juice. It's made from 100% organic ingredients (worm castings, volcanic minerals, bone meal, seabird guano, and kelp) and delivers phosphorus and potassium right when flowering plants need them. Elm Dirt says it can extend the blooming period by 4 to 6 weeks.
How to use it:
- When flower buds appear, sprinkle Bloomin' Soil on the soil surface around the plant.
- Gently work it into the top inch of soil and water it in.
- Reapply every four to six weeks to keep the blooms coming.
The power pairing: Bloomin' Soil feeds steadily from below, while Bloom Juice gives a fast-acting boost with each watering. Together they are the backbone of the Bloom Power Bundle.
Step 3: Strengthen With Kelp Mist

Sometimes plants need help that soil feeding can't deliver fast enough: after a move, during a heat wave, or while recovering from repotting. That's where Kelp Mist Foliar Spray comes in. Made from sustainably harvested ocean kelp, it delivers more than 70 trace minerals and vitamins, plus natural plant growth hormones, directly through the leaves.
Use it for: Transplant shock, newly delivered plants, drought or heat stress, and an all-around boost for houseplants and vegetables.
How to use it:
- Shake and mist the tops and undersides of the leaves until lightly damp.
- Spray in the morning or evening, not in harsh midday sun.
- Use weekly on stressed or newly repotted plants. The ready-to-use bottle can be refilled with Kelp Mist Concentrate, diluted per the concentrate label.
A tip from our greenhouse: When your new plant from Rooted Treasures Farms arrives, give it a light misting of Kelp Mist after unboxing. It's a gentle "welcome home" that helps it settle into its new environment.
Step 4: Clean and Protect
A plant's leaves are its solar panels. When they are dusty, spotted, or covered with pests, the plant can't make the energy it needs to grow. Elm Dirt's three protection products work as a team, from daily maintenance to targeted treatment.
Plant Perfection: Clean Leaves, Healthy Plant

Plant Perfection is far more than a leaf shine. It removes hard-water spots, repels dust that clogs leaf pores (stomata), and eliminates soft-bodied pests like fungus gnats, aphids, and mites, as well as eggs you can't see. It's made with just water, vinegar, peppermint castile soap, and coconut oil.
How to use it:
- Spray onto leaves or onto a soft cloth.
- Gently wipe each leaf, supporting it from underneath with your other hand.
- Use every few weeks as part of your routine, and anytime leaves look dusty or spotted.
Perfect for: Big, glossy leaves that show every speck of dust. Our guide to big-leaf houseplants is full of plants that will love this treatment.
Shield: Your Plants' Everyday Defense

Shield is the preventive layer. Its four natural ingredients (chitosan, peppermint oil, kaolin clay, and castile soap) create a barrier that makes plants unwelcoming to aphids, spider mites, beetles, whiteflies, leafhoppers, thrips, and fruit flies. It's classified as minimum risk under FIFRA Section 25(b), which you can learn more about on the EPA's minimum risk pesticides pageΒ
How to use it:
- No mixing: shake and spray, coating the tops and undersides of leaves.
- Use it as a preventive spray when you bring a new plant home, before moving plants outdoors for summer, and before bringing them back inside in fall.
- It's safe for edible gardens, with no waiting to harvest.
Sword: Targeted Treatment When Pests Strike

If Shield is your fence, Sword is your spot treatment. Made with chitosan and rosemary oil, it targets spider mites, aphids, fungus gnats, whiteflies, scale, and even powdery mildew. Chitosan triggers the plant's natural immune response, while rosemary oil disrupts pests and fights fungal problems. It's also EPA minimum risk, with zero harvest wait time.
How to use it:
- Isolate the affected plant from your other plants.
- Spray directly on pests and affected areas, including leaf undersides and stems.
- Spray in the early morning or evening. Once dry, it's safe around kids, pets, bees, and ladybugs.
- Repeat as needed until the problem is gone, then switch back to Shield for prevention.
Good practice for any spray: Test on a small area of a leaf first, and wait a day before treating the whole plant, especially on delicate or rare varieties.
The Bundles: Complete Systems in One Box
If you'd rather not piece a routine together product by product, Elm Dirt's bundles do it for you.
Seed Starting Bundle

The Seed Starting Bundle includes 5 lbs of Seedling Mix, 32 oz of Plant Juice, 16 oz of Kelp Mist, and a 2-oz measuring glass. Soak seeds in diluted Plant Juice so microbes colonize them before they sprout, grow them in the light Seedling Mix that helps prevent damping off, and mist weekly with Kelp Mist to build resilience before transplanting. Perfect for tomatoes, peppers, herbs, greens, and flowers.
Bloom Power Bundle

The Bloom Power Bundle pairs 32 oz of Bloom Juice with 2 lbs of Bloomin' Soil for fast-acting and slow-release flower nutrition. When buds appear, top-dress with Bloomin' Soil, water regularly with diluted Bloom Juice through the flowering period, and reapply Bloomin' Soil every four to six weeks.
Gardener's Gift Flowering Bundle

The Gardener's Gift is the complete flowering system: 5 lbs of All-Purpose Potting Soil, 32 oz of Bloom Juice, 2 lbs of Bloomin' Soil, and an Elm Dirt measuring glass. It makes a wonderful gift for a new homeowner, a retiring friend, or anyone who loves flowers. Pair it with a plant from our holiday gift collection for a present that keeps growing.
Bulk Garden Bundle

For big collections and serious gardeners, the Bulk Garden Bundle includes 2.5-gallon jugs of both Plant Juice and Bloom Juice. Each jug makes 320 to 640 gallons when diluted and lasts four to six months for gardens with 50 or more plants, at roughly 25% savings compared to 32-oz bottles.
Your Healthy Plant Care Calendar
Here is how all of these products come together into one simple rhythm. Print it, pin it to the fridge, and let it do the remembering for you.
Every week
- Check soil moisture with your finger; water only when the plant needs it.
- Look under a few leaves for pests. Catching problems early makes them easy to solve.
- Mist newly repotted or stressed plants with Kelp Mist.
- Give struggling plants a drink of worm tea.
Every 2 to 4 weeks
- Feed foliage plants with Plant Juice in spring and summer.
- Feed flowering and fruiting plants with Bloom Juice every two to three weeks.
- Clean leaves with Plant Perfection.
Every 4 to 6 weeks
- Top-dress with a 1/4-inch layer of Worm Castings.
- Reapply Bloomin' Soil around plants in bloom.
Seasonally
- Spring: Repot root-bound plants into All-Purpose Soil Mix or Aroid Mix, blended with worm castings. Start seeds with the Seed Starting Bundle.
- Summer: Spray Shield before moving houseplants outside. See which indoor plants thrive outdoors in warm weather.
- Fall: Spray Shield again before bringing plants back inside so you don't bring hitchhikers in with them.
- Winter: Cut feeding back to every four to six weeks, water less, and keep leaves dust-free so plants can make the most of shorter days.
